Hi Lexington

I think you have nailed it in one paragraph. Cary Grant's passion and professionalism made him the great star he was. He respected the work and his audience and that was his focus.

Hi Dan,

I agree with you about Holiday, it is a gem. I am torn between "North By Northwest" and "Thief". Somehow "Thief" feels more Grant and less Hitchcock and "Northwest" vice-versa. It feels like Grant gives more of his acting self in "Thief" but agree that "North by Northwest" is a great movie.

Sorry, I see you said "many" people consider Thief his finest. Never the less, I suspect that if you were to poll classic movie lovers, 'His Girl Friday" would be at the top of many lists. It is simply one of the best comedies ever written.

While I share your affection for Cary Grant (although I loath Bringing Up Baby) I find it hard to believe that "most" people think "To Catch a Thief" is his best movie. I suspect that "Notorious", or "North By Northwest" would both be ranked higher that TCAT (although I do enjoy Thief very much). "Holiday" (which also stars Katherine Hepburn) is an underappreciated gem.

Bravo.

I would only add that you left out one thing. Cary Grant was an absolute professional, in a profession filled with prima donnas, irresponsible lightweights, drunks, dope fiends and vapid pretty things. He was on time, he was alert, he was aware of the work that needed to be done that day, he was a gracious and helpful team player and he knew his lines stone cold -- every day, like clockwork.

To me that spirit of professionalism and grown-up seriousness about his work is the core of the man, the thing that gave substance to the impeccable style.

Nice piece. I must say though that, in my humble opinion, the McCann biography is THE book about Cary - stylish, informative and full of insights, and it's a biography, not a filmography, so the balance (or imbalance) between the life and the films is just as it should be. Anyway, happy birthday, CG!
